Aug 10 Ties To The Land workshop at Oneida County UW-Extension office in the Rhinelander/Oneida County Airport Terminal on August 10 and 17 (2 session workshop) from 2-4 pm.  Ties To The Land workshop focuses on ways to maintain family ties to the land from generation to generation, building awareness of key challenges facing family forest ownership, and motivating families to address those challenges.  Workshop is a mix of presentations and practical exercises to help families develop needed techniques.
Preregistration is required by August 3. Limit 30 people.

WWOA Phoenix Falls Chapter Annual Summer Picnic at the Jim & June Kingsbury’s Tree Farm by Mountain in Oconto County starting at 10 am.  We will be having a picnic lunch at noon with a walk in the woods afterward to discuss their 2015 timber sale and 2016 MFL rollover.  The chapter will provide soft drinks, coffee, and disposable table service.  Bring a wonderful dish to pass, wear comfortable walking shoes, bug repellant, lawn chairs and children and grandchildren that you can find since they are much welcomed as well!!

Aug 21 WWOA Blackhawk Chapter Summer Picnic at Steve & Carol Armstrong's west of Fort Atkinson between Ft Atkinson and Bussyville on Highway 106.  Beginning at 11 am.  Please bring a dish to pass, drinks and utensils will be provided.  After lunch, there will be tours of their property with a forester.  Contact Curt Jacob at curtrksmith@charter.net

WWOA Northwest Chapter Field Day at Kissinger's properties on Drake Lane, off Little Sissabagama Road starting at 9 am.  Tour of Little Sissabagama 70 acre parcel followed by a potluck lunch (bring a dish to share and your chair; drinks, utensils and plate provided).  Then tour their Reforestation 13 acre parcel with the day ending about 3 pm.  Consulting forester, Jeff Groeschl and retired DNR wildlife specialist Sam Moore with share their experiences and comments as we hike the properties.  Topics will include red oak management, conifer plantings, culvert installation, creating openings and edge for wildlife, and pond shorelines.  Contact Kissingers at 715-865-3419 or ajkiss@centurytel.net
Aug 28 WWOA North Central Chapter Fall Field Day at Ed Drager's Monahan Forest just off of Baker Lake Road in Vilas Co. A walking tour, on a well maintained level trail, of red and white pine management.  Bring a lunch to enjoy after our walk.  Then travel to Northern Highlands State Forest to learn more about wildlife relationships to varying intensities of Northern Hardwood management. in old growth stands. You are encouraged to bring a bike and helmet but a few rentals are available.  No fee except for rentals.  Contact the WWOA office to arrange for bike rental

8:45 am a guided tour of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc including the USS COBIA, the nation’s most completely restored WW II submarine.  The submarine is not handicapped accessible; you must be able to step through the many hatches.  A video about the USS COBIA is available for those unable to tour the submarine.

After lunch, travel to Two Rivers for a tour of the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, the only museum dedicated to the preservation, production, and printing of wood type fonts.

visit a variety of lakeshore forest habitats within Point Beach by hiking. Topics include the forest management plan, ridge swale habitat, beech bark disease and red pine pocket decline, and a recent pine timber harvest.  Several hikes up to ˝ mile one way through sandy areas and a catered in late lunch (12:30 pm) at the Nature Center are planned.

 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM                 Forest response and management in a changing climate, Chris Swanston, USFS, NRS Climate is changing, but the uncertainty in the severity of future changes presents landowners and managers with challenges.  This talk will present an overview of climate change, forest responses to climate change, and strategies of adapting our forests to these changes.

Insects and Diseases of 2010, what was affecting your forest?, Linda Williams, WI DNR –
Insect and disease issues change from year to year, from season to season, and from site to site.  To confuse the matter, environmental conditions can play a big role in the long-term health of the forest, which can impact the insect or disease issues that will affect the trees.  Presentation will cover the major insect and disease issues affecting forest lands in 2010 as well as some of the major forest health issues that are on the horizon.

Managing Northern Hardwoods, Mike Lietz, WI DNR
Talk will focus on the description, landowner objectives, silvics, and silvicultural methods associated with management of northern hardwoods in Wisconsin.  Additional information on harvesting operational considerations and ecological features will be discussed.
